Chief Legal Officers (CLOs) and deputies have one of the most challenging corporate jobs. Like all senior executives, they must perform in highly dynamic environments, working with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Board, their Executive peers, business leaders, control functions, and internal teams to advance the objectives of the company.
CLOs and deputies also have the specialized role of acting as trusted counselors to the CEO and the Board while maintaining a duty to the organization and a level of independence. The best ones are well-tuned into evolving trends regarding flexible work, artificial intelligence, generational succession, and the shifting DEI landscape. They also serve as the moral compass on risk, culture, and ethics.
Through Context Coaching, we begin by helping you understand yourself–your story, your strengths, your roadblocks, and your goals. We then help you systematically identify and prioritize the moving parts of your organization. We will also examine the larger environment, regulators, outside counsel, auditors, consultants, social trends, and the role they play in your organization. Together, we will create and implement an action plan to authentically and effectively navigate and lead in your world.
I am now Chief Legal Officer at a Fortune 250 company, and I can honestly say that I use the tools I developed working with Dave every day in my current role. Any senior legal professional who is looking for a coach should definitely work with Dave.

Under the best of circumstances, law firm leaders have a challenging job. They succeed as a partner based on the quality of their work and the strength of their practice. As leaders, however, they must attend to a wide range of management responsibilities. These can extend outside of their comfort zone, including training new attorneys, evaluating and retaining talent, setting budgets, developing business, and overseeing national and international practices. Add in flexible work, artificial intelligence, generational succession, and the shifting dei landscape, and the challenges just multiply.
Through Context Coaching, we begin by helping you understand yourself–your story, your strengths, your roadblocks, and your goals. We then help you systematically identify and prioritize the moving parts of your firm, tea,m and larger environment. We will do so by examining social and legal trends, media demands, your client’s perspective, and the evolving codes of expected behavior that impact your organization. Together, we will create and implement an action plan to authentically and effectively navigate and lead in your world.
Based on my experience with Dave while he was Chief Legal Officer at Equitable, I recommend Hattem Advisors without reservation. Dave offers truth with love. And both are in short supply. The greater your success, the harder it is to get truly honest coaching. Dave will give it to you with courage and caring, in context. You can thank me later!
